about

Sonata Pathetique – Adagio cantabile Beethoven

Rhythmically, the Adagio receives a Latin influence which is established in an improvised piano introduction. The chordal and melodic material are also given idiomatic license in keeping with a Latin Jazz interpretation. In order for the musicians to perform improvisations outside of the written form,
I have included a technique I call “freeze frame”. The composition is ‘frozen’ at a suitable bar, (eg, the beginning of a new section) which is then explored musically in a free time frame before continuing with the composed piece. The challenge is to enter and exit these freeze frames with musical continuity and integrity to the original composition.
We complete the journey with an improvised coda based on the introduction.
