about

I spent a month in The Gambia in 1992, jamming with whoever whenever I could. A mini recorder in my pocket at all times, some wonderful spontaneous moments were captured. On return to Germany, inspired to compose something, I happened to hear some contemporary classical music from Radio France while the Nigerian guys staying upstairs were playing some songs from their part of the world. The simultaneous hybrid of music coming out the house said: "this is the sound you need to compose". At the same time I was reading Doris Lessing's "Hunger", based in Africa, which became the storyline for the composition.
